still life with odd flowers

paintings

Quoting Barthes quoting Brassaï on Mondrian: “There’s a man who paints flowers to live. And why does he want to live? So he can paint straight lines.” Amused by the idea of Mondrian secretly painting odd flowers in a world built on geometry, I began a still life series.

Each painting repeats a simple composition: three vases on a table, each holding an odd flower or two or three. The works were painted in reverse on glass, then peeled off and mounted onto silk. These “skins” were draped over painted wooden supports. The soft, garment-like material resists the rigid structure beneath it. These paintings flirt with still life but twist it into something more flamboyant and unstable.
