I’m partial to objects of a certain type. In particular, ones caught between the here and there. Paintings as sculptures. Books as doorstops. Photographs as paintings. Will this be an exhibition opening or an open studio?
My eyes are open, but I’m not listening.
I’m making plans, for a fantasy. Pulling together a body, of work (paintings). Is this a failed memorial? Whose archive is this? Mine? Yours? Ours?Is intimacy the trespassing of the other? This time, will I be the subject or the object?
Let’s trade places for a while.
We’re making plans. We could arrange to meet in a hotel in midtown. Cliche and kitsch, the course d’jour.
For your pleasure, a flamboyant driving force.
Longing is heartbreak projected into the future. A desire to be seen. As if being seen would validate or impart coherence to oneself.
I am a photograph, I am better than the real thing.
Join me in viewing this selection of paintings, partial objects, and notes as a bridge from the last exhibition, Correspondences, to the next, Partial Objects. Partial Objects is borrowed from my friend, my mentor, and curious soul George Pitts who had a gift for opening and stirring up space. I wish to return to that space and those encounters as content, lacking a subject.
